I won't get political, just exercise your right to either keep who you like in, keep who you don't like out, run the current bastards out of town, or whatever. This forum is such a pleasant distraction from all the sh*t going on around the country and the world, but make your voice and vote be heard no matter how you vote. Thanks. Look forward to checking out the Pigpen Compilation on the way to the polls!!

I not only allways vote I make it a point that my 8yr old daughter and 4 yr old son go with me so that they know WHY it's important.

Even though I too beleive we are a corporate oligarchy, even though this right is getting RIGGED worse all the time. They're too young at this point I think for me to turn them cynical.

If we all don't vote, we're certain to get a new king and taxation without representation, you morons. No offense. ;)

I think you should be cynical of every proposition. But cynicism ends when you learn the facts.

AND, you can obstain from voting on any measure, proposition or election you have not studied. I left a few items blank today because I had not read the appropriate material.

BUT for the issues that effect my family and business, you can bet I was there to voice my opinion...

Several old sayings apply here...Grass is always greener...and the devil you know...

I think many people feel this is a TV show and it's happening to someone else. To those people I say WAKE UP...

"I think you should be cynical of every proposition" Sounds like the fearmonkeys have hit a target.
IF I were to vote, it would be in my neighbors interest as well as mine. In other word, not just if it effects my family or career. Let's not let politics be divisive, but encourage dialog among anyone who cares to participate. Even if our opinion of others is of a moron.

How so? The definition of cynicsm is the beleif that people are motivated by selfish motives and I beleive they are some are worse than others. Think about it - even people who promote charity, etc., do they not partly do it because it makes THEM feel good? If it rules and clouds your brain then it turns more into pessimism, I think people often get these two DIFFERENT words mixed up.Being wary of peoples motives is SMART, only relying on faith is not imo.

Hi lastcall - Drive w/ some fear, vote with some fear. That's survival, baby. I don't wanna get eaten, so I stay smart and alert. Many Americans have the sedated, lazy-mind syndrome and spend far too little time thinking...

I feel many folks believe watching or listening is the same as thinking. It is not. To form an opinion one must read, listen, watch, THEN think. Too many people skip the last step and just regurgitate what they've heard in TV/radio argument shows....that's insane.

Nobody here is a moron. That was a joke....

JodyC ... thanks for your words. I try never to swing either way in the extreme. Aristotle, through much of his writings (what i've read anyway), always spoke of trying to live between the extremes of appetite and spirit, to balance the pull between the external and internal "worlds." I believe the myth of Daedalus & Icarus perfectly conveys this human dilemma, and how each person approaches it.

Anyway, if the voters here in RI kill question #1, i'll be happy. That's it.

Also, for some reason i've carried this little bit of lyric in my head since high school, by Jefferson Airplane. Forgot the song it's from, but i always found it interesting:

"I'd rather have my country die for me."

Obviously it more speaks the country 40 years ago, but i'd like to think that it conveys the idea of individual autonomy and freedom from big brother and an overreaching government.

it was a voter referendum to change the state constitution to allow an indian casino. while not against gambling in general (to each their own), the manner of this particular proposal sends a chill up my spine. however, no worries from this part of the country ... at 11'21 in the PM, it's already a lost cause. i can sleep tonite.

by the way, don't know if you follow b-ball, but congrats on the Cardinals victory. historically, the Cards are a giant on the stage of major league baseball and i for one am glad that they took another crown. great team, great city (spent time their in '90), great people, and hopefully a hope for the future when the cities along the coasts, left and right, implode and self-destruct.

While the system is mighty flawed, and the feeling of helplessness is overwhelming at times, try to do whats best. While voting against somebody is not quite the same as voting for someone else, its all onecan do with their vote. And when consistently more people watch American Idol than vote (which sends me to the brink of insanity!)I can't let the chance slip by to speak my mind in the polls. There are always other issues- stem cell research, tax increases, etc that you may actually have far more control over than the politicians.

Well, as the father of a son in the military who has already completed a 12 month stint in Baghdad and will likely have to go back sometime in 2007 for an ill-defined and poorly managed assignment, I have to say that I, for one, think that I would do anything to get the current butt holes out of office or at least make them more accountable for what they are doing with our kids lives. The new batch of talking heads may be no better than what we've got now, but they deserve a chance before I get that phone call. I'm not telling you all what to do, just my opinion. On my way to vote after work, I'll be blasting "Throwing Stones" (maybe the one time I will ever do that). Whatever you do and whichever way you choose to vote, DO NOT let this day go by without at least making some effort to let them know what you think about what they are doing.
I was just thinking about what has to be an incumbent's greatest fear: a horde of tye-dye wearing, aging hippies flooding the voting booths. Let's go folks, let's scare the crap out of them.

Hi - Yes, please vote. In Califonia, Max is right, the Govenator will remain in office. The bigger issue is Attorney General in our fine state. Do your homework people....this is big.

ADDITION - WAIT A MINUTE MAX! You must vote! C'mon man! Passive aggressive does not fly in a democracy. Nobody will feel bad for you if you don't stand up and protect what you believe in. So, you're gonna have to decide what is impotant to you. Elections should be a time for all of us to engage in a little internal dialogue. You know, read the issues and THINK about how you feel. THINK about the people you love and how these issues effect them. The future of YOUR FAMILY(not just America) is at stake. Take it personally! The media paints the 'everyday citizen' as a victim of the system. If you don't vote, they are right....

Maybe they just do it in a shady way? a less effectice way? a way where the means are pitted against us, and the advantage of doing what good they DO do for americans, brings more good on to them? sigh

Its why so many around the world despise and resent our way of life and standard of living achievable thru our unique political system. Exercise your right to voice your opinion, which ever way the political wind blows for you personally.

AZ seems to be turning into a Purple state! Woo Woo!!! We didn't fire Kyl, but we did fire Hayworth! Just got home from work a little while ago, and it seems like the results are pretty good, all things considered. We do have somewhere around 25-30% Independents here, or is it just the CA transplants? Haven't heard, just heard National results.. It sounds like WE got the House!!! And it's looking like a dead heat for the Senate. Pardon my passion but, Fuck George W(eenie) Bush! Better days to come maybe!!! Can't get much worse.

This was a great thread on an important day. Lot's of very good posts, even got Max to come around! Not being able to vote out of necessity (wish we had spell check here) is one thing, not voting out of apathy is unacceptable! If nothing else, vote to secure you're bitching rights! I still don't understand the presidential voting. If in the end, the electoral college does it, why bother? The 2000 elections were so depressing that I don't ever want to vote in my life. I'm old enough now, and I just plain won't. Even if we elect the electoral college reps (who IIRC, don't always folow through and vote for their initial nominee), shouldn't it be the public voting for -their- president? All the crackheads, bums, single parent mothers and fathers, etc..? Bottom line is.. I might end up at points in my life, voting on a small scale level.. like mayor of the city and things like that. But I don't know about that other junk.

Hey Max- this is the more local election and your vote actually does make a difference. We'll work on the Presidential thing with you in a couple years. This vote will/could change how the Senate and House vote (ie they can vote against the Prez). I am just a little less knowledgeable about our political system than I am about computers, but not caring or not trying at your age (not trying to guilt you or sound like your dad- I have an 18 yr old of my own)is what got my age group in trouble years ago for the same reason. Its interested people like you and my daughter that have to take a stand early and often. Sorry for soapboxing. Now go vote and I'll buy you a beer in 3 years (thats stil f'd up in my book!)

We all know the answer (he didn't vote), but like so many that have posted on this thread, I have come back around to voting myself (didn't for many years for the reasons outlined here), especially given the many important local issues. Ironically, 2000 had a different impact on me: I realized my little vote might mean more than it ever had before. Even though I almost always write in Alfred E Newmann for President, the lesser of two evils is still less evil...

"Friends:

I just want to remind you to make sure you vote tomorrow. Democracy is sacred, and every year it seems our democracy is slipping away. The only way we can protect it is to participate, and make sure we vote for candidates who represent our own particular views.

No excuses now. Get out and vote!"

I am so tired of seeing images of daughters and sons and wives crying next to their father's/husband's flag draped caskets.
There was a still image on the news last week of a little eight year old girl weeping in agony while standing in front of her daddy's casket. I actually burst into tears and was so overwhelmed with emotion, i almost went on a rant on this forum (decided i need to cool down before going "off.") The little girl looked JUST like my eight year old beautiful daughter. I just cannot imagine..... I am so friggin sick of this "war."

(that image is going to stay with me for a long long time)

I totally understand. I work in the news business and am normally pretty hardened to this kind of stuff, but since this regime has been in power, it's been too much to take.

I started the water works myself watching the "When the Levees Broke" documentary Spike Lee did for HBO. In part b/c I went to school in New Orleans and have a real fondness for that place, but mostly b/c of the pure human misery that was playing out against the backdrop of callousness and cluelessness that passes for "leadership" these days. I'm not saying Democrats have all the answers, or that someone else could have prevented the worst of Katrina, but the response to it was clearly unacceptable in what is supposed to be an era of "compassionate" conservatism.
